What is Christian Science?
The Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, is the foundation for the theology and practice of Christian Science. It is a Christian denomination, with the Bible and especially Jesus’ teachings at the heart of its practice. In Christian Science, God is understood as always upholding the health and wellbeing of His creation. The power of prayer lies not in faith alone but in a deeper understanding of God and His divine laws that embrace humanity and result in healing.
Who is the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science?
In 1866, a life-threatening injury compelled Mary Baker Eddy, of Lynn Massachusetts, to turn to God. She opened her Bible to an account of Jesus healing a man quickly and completely of palsy. A new sense of God, Spirit, flooded her thought and she was immediately healed. For the next several years she searched the Bible, discovering the underlying laws of God that formed the basis of her teaching and practice of Christian Science. This study resulted in her primary work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which contains the full explanation of Christian Science and its practice of spiritual healing.
What is the Church of Christ, Scientist?
By 1879, Mrs. Eddy founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, “To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.” (Church Manual of The First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston Mass., page 17). In 1892 the Church was reorganized and officially named, “The First Church of Christ, Scientist” (also known as the Mother Church) serving as the world-wide church headquarters, located in Boston, Massachusetts . Church membership is not required to study Christian Science or to attend services. Today there are church members in over 130 countries and democratically run branch churches in over 70 countries. The Christian Science Society, Beaufort, is a branch of the Mother Church. We are a healing and loving church that is based on the teachings of Christ Jesus, as taught in the Bible, and where every visitor who is seeking the Truth is warmly welcomed.
